In the spring of 1890, while Frank Lloyd Wright was chief draftsman at Louis Sullivan’s office, the firm designed this vacation house for James Charnley. A precursor to the Chicago residence Sullivan and Wright designed for Charnley the following year (now the Charnley-Persky House, see p. 42), the T-shaped main house and smaller octagonal guest cottage of the country residence sat directly on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and next to a similar house Sullivan designed and built for himself. The main house burned down in 1897 but was immediately rebuilt by Sullivan for Chicago businessman Frederick Norwood on the original site following the original plan.

In 2005, both the main house and the guest cottage were severely damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Fortunately, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH), the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy prevented their demolition, and the MDAH and Mississippi Department of Marine Resources funded a $2.3 million acquisition and restoration of the main house to its circa-1900 appearance. In 2013, the restored building, now owned by the State of Mississippi, opened to the public for tours by appointment.
